The View from My Refrigerator.
Driving to work this morning, I saw another bumper sticker that says, “My child is an honor student.” It’s a fact, we parents love to brag about our children.
So, please, permit me to do the same.
This is what greets each member of my family as we open our refrigerator and reach for the milk. It’s an original oil painting by my oldest daughter, who is a visual arts student at the high school she attends. She would kill me if she knew I was posting it here! “Painting,” she says, “is not my forté,” and she doesn’t think it’s very good.
I do. So does my wife. So does everyone who walks in my home and looks around. Our house is full of paintings, sculptures and metalworks that our second-year art student has created seemingly with no effort at all. The funny thing is, she has no interest in becoming an artist, at least professionally. She’s considering a career in medicine, with art as a side-hobby.
That way, she can pay her bills, and take the “starving’ out of artist!

Hey thanks for visiting my site.
That painting is amazing! You have a cool site!
Thanks Jess! I’m not sure where I’m going with this site, but my rule so far has been no talk of work. Family stuff only. I love the comments about your family on your site. The quotes from hubby are hilarious!
Hey man, thanks for the comment on my post. I don’t get comments from non-family/friends often so it’s nice. Surprisingly, I didn’t even know you were on the news b/c I never watch it.
Neat blog you have over here though. That’s a really good painting. I’m a Graphic Design student at Anderson University. If she ever changes her mind about the medicine thing, Graphic Design is a great art-related job that doesn’t include the “starving” part haha, and AU is a great school for it.
My Dad was a starving artist, so I just do it for enjoyment and a bit of freelance.
Teaching school paid the bills for a while, until my husband was out of school and could take over. It’s good to have a way to support one’s self since the world of art has its ups and downs. Medicine? She won’t starve.
Michelle, let’s hope the medicine-thing remains part of her career plan. She’s only 17, and the plan could change.
